Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
